Manchester marks freedom slavery and Jamaica's Political Independence

MANDEVILLE, Manchester — 'Emancipendence' celebrations in south/central Jamaica, much like the rest of the island, took varied forms.

Leading up to the civic ceremony, Independence Festival Showcase and Parish Gala that culminated in the activities of August 6, the events organised by the Manchester branch of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), included "Big Stage" auditions and community square concerts, church services to recognise Emancipation and Independence, an Emancipation Vigil, an Emancipation Day Celebration of Drums and Festival Bandwagon Shows.

Here are photo highlights from the Independence Civic Ceremony at the Cecil Charlton Park in Mandeville and the Emancipation Vigil on the grounds of the Mandeville Courthouse.
