GOV. GENERAL LOCAL GOVERNMENT & COMMUNITY MONTH MESSAGE

MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE OF HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL
THE MOST HON. SIR PATRICK ALLEN ON, GCMG, CD, KSt.J,
FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT & COMMUNITY MONTH
Nov 1, 2015

Over the years, the Ministry of Local Government And Community Development, Social Development Commission and Local Authorities have been charting a clear path in governance and democracy. I am therefore pleased to extend best wishes to you as you observe Local Government and Community Month and seek to highlight the significance of your roles and functions in the achievement of our national development agenda.

Your keen emphasis on community advancement has undoubtedly been affirming you as one of the driving forces in Jamaica becoming the place of choice to live, work, raise families and do business.

I urge you to be mindful of the awesome responsibility with which you are tasked. Be diligent as you fulfill your roles for the economic, social and environmental well being of our fellow Jamaicans. Never lose sight of your mandate as you move to establish job creation, welfare opportunities, sustainable development projects and civic order.

I am encouraged by your theme for this year’s celebration, “Empowering Communities through Improved Governance.”
This theme not only indicates your continued devotion to our communities but also your commitment to uphold fundamental values of professionalism, transparency, accountability and excellence. Amidst the varying challenges, I urge you to remain steadfast to these ideals. Let them be your guiding principles.

Your strides in educating the nation on the significance you play in community and national development is noteworthy. I applaud your consistency in hosting Youth Councils and incorporating our young leaders in Local Authorities as Junior Mayors.  In addition to hosting Town Hall meetings and spearheading public education campaigns, continue to be creative and innovative in seizing opportunities to educate the public on your importance and relevance.

I congratulate those who will be acknowledge in this year’s awards ceremony and charge you to bolster your pledge to the Local Government Reform process.
